Nulo was pleased to sponsor this year’s  Houston Barkitecture with all proceeds supporting Pup Squad, a dedicated Houston Animal Rescue organization.

Barkitecture is an annual event that challenges selected Houston architects, designers, builders and artists  to create amazing new dog houses that are auctioned off to benefit Pup Squad. The Pup Squad’s goal is to rescue orphaned puppies, kittens and nursing litters from the streets and other life-threatening situations and match them with adoptive homes, as well as to provide support and education to these adopters and the community at large. One hundred percent of all proceeds from this year’s silent auction benefited Pup Squad.

Nulo provided free samples to interested visitors at the event and each winning bid received a bag of Nulo pet food to go with their new home.

If we love our pets as we love ourselves, should we take care of them as we take care of ourselves, too?

Yes, say UT alum Brett Montana, BBA ’82, and his friend Michael Landa, the founders of Austin-based natural pet food brand Nulo. They equate standard pet food to fatty fast food and sugar-loaded sweets.

“It’s like feeding a child four candy bars,” Landa says. “There’s an incredible energy response that leads to a crash.”

After spending a decade on the front lines of pet care, Landa should know. While managing their first company, a pet-sitting business called The Pet Staff, the pair became concerned about the number of animals requiring daily insulin shots. After speaking to veterinarians, pet rehabilitation centers, and nutritionists, it all boiled down to nutrition.

Given U.S. pet obesity rates—58 percent of cats and 45 percent of dogs—Landa and Montana felt they had to do something.

Michael Landa says he’s been on the front lines of feeding pets for years, ever since he started a pet-sitting service in Los Angeles in 2001.

A few years ago, though, he noticed something startling — his staff could barely keep up with insulin shots for diabetic animals.

“I was running around doing insulin shots, and one day I just woke up and said, ‘What the hell is going on?’”

Discussions with veterinarians and scientists revealed the problem, he said: their food.

As a result, the idea for an all-natural brand of pet food was born. Last year, Landa’s Austin-based company, Nulo, launched its line of dog and cat foods — with varieties that include wild-caught salmon and free-range turkey and lamb.

Already the 12-employee company has gotten help from some big-name Austin backers. For one, Sweet Leaf Tea founder Clayton Christopher has invested — “enough to make it really interesting,” he said — and serves on the company’s board of advisers.

Nulo recently teamed up with Whole Foods Market and Pet Paradise to benefit Houston’s Spay-Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP). A day of good clean fun was had by all at the Whole Foods Kirby store as a free Shampooch was given to every visiting dog.

It was another hot day in Texas, but the deserving canines were able to cool off with fresh baths and some loving scrubs. Volunteers from Pet Paradise, Nulo and SNAP were all on hand to talk about pet care, pet nutrition, and Houston’s own SNAP program.
