Water Basics for Your Pet
One of the most important things you do for your pet is provide him or her with fresh, clean water every day, but do you know why or even how much is needed? Here are some basic reasons why water is so essential for your pet and some great tips on how to provide it.
Why is Water Important?
Much like with humans, your dog or cat's body consists of more than 50 percent water. Water helps keeps body organs functioning normally, regulates body temperature, aids digestion, and helps blood circulate through the body.
Conversely, animals that do not drink enough water are sluggish, with sunken eyes and skin that does not quickly fall back into place once pulled up and away from the body. If dehydration is allowed to become severe enough, it can even lead to shock and eventually death.
What Does My Pet Need?
In general, a healthy animal will drink enough water as long as the bowl is appropriately sized. Your job is to keep the bowl clean and filled. For an average-sized animal (about 25 pounds), provide at least 16 ounces of water daily. Another rule of thumb is to give about one ounce of water per pound (this is both for dogs and cats). Meanwhile, larger animals will require more water, as will pets that exercise more or are outside in warm weather.
To keep it from being easily tipped over by a rambunctious cat or dog, pick a bowl that has a wide, heavy bottom. To prevent bacterial buildup, wash the bowl with dish soap daily. And if you have several pets, it may be necessary to place several water bowls in different locations so that all the pets get enough to drink.
If, for any reason, you are unsure your pet is getting enough water, contact your veterinarian. He or she can advise you on ways to monitor for dehydration and techniques to entice your pet to drink more.
