Dry foods have an expiration of 1 year from date of manufacture.
Variety in food is good and it keeps our pets enthusiastic about their meals. But many times pet parents can only offer unique recipes through a mixture of different brands – often leading to significant digestive issues. With Nulo’s proprietary recipes and special blends, your pet can experience a little variety in their nutrition without the complications of switching formulas. Now you can feed chicken in the morning and lamb or salmon in the evening knowing that your dog can experience variety without consequences.
Just like the foods we put into our own bodies, it remains OUR responsibility to know the ingredients we put into our pets’ bodies as well. Any good veterinarian will recommend that you look at the pet food bag or go online to read the ingredient list. Are the first two ingredients anything other than meat sources? (e.g., chicken and chicken meal) Are there any By-Product ingredients? Do they use BHA (a chemical preservative) in their food? Do they have Corn or Soybean in their food? If you find yourself answering ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then, it’s not the highest quality food. Move on to better options.
The carbohydrate sources that Nulo uses in its food products (brown rice, oatmeal and sweet potato) are gentle, highly-digestible ingredients that are easy on the stomach. In fact, when you’re dog is sick or has diarrhea, what’s the first thing a vet will recommend? Plain brown rice. Not corn gluten meal, or soy, or wheat.
Nulo seems to be the food of choice for picky dogs. We believe in large part due to the high proportion of animal-based protein found in our diets, but also as a result of the freshness of the product since we deliver direct to your door. Backed by our 100% unconditional guarantee, it’s a win-win for finicky fidos everywhere.
The ingredients in Nulo’s foods do not contain known, common allergens. Consult the label to ensure your dog is not allergic to any of the specific ingredients found in Nulo foods, and, as always, consult with your veterinarian if you have any medical-related questions or concerns.
Our foods do not contain corn, wheat, soy nor meat by-products which are thought by most nutritionists to be the leading culprits of food-related allergies. Nor will you find chemical preservatives (BHT, BHA or Ethyoxyquin) or artificial coloring in any of Nulo’s foods.
The combined nutrients found in Nulo’s foods are essential for the development of healthy skin and coat.
As much as 30 percent of an animals’ daily protein requirement will be used to nourish their skin and coat. In some breeds, the combined growth of all of the body hair can add up to 100 feet per day!
The antioxidant vitamins (A, C, E), biotin, riboflavin, and minerals such as copper and zinc are all necessary for proper health and maintenance. Signs of poor vitamin absorption may include generalized scaling with thick crusty lesions, abnormal secretions of oils onto the skin and coat and non-specific hair loss.
Also, when a dog does not receive enough fatty acids in their diet, or receives them in the wrong proportions, the pet parent may see signs of deficiency such as dull, dry coat with scaling dry skin. There may also be an abnormal tallow-like substance produced on the pet, which may have an unpleasant smell or greasy appearance. Hot spots may also be attributed to fatty acid deficiency. Nulo’s fatty acid system utilizes Omega 3 and 6 in scientifically perfected proportions in order to ensure optimal amounts and bioavailability –a difference you’ll clearly see in the sheen of their coat.
Always check with your veterinarian first if your pet has a diagnosed medical condition requiring a specific nutrient profile in order to treat the ailment. Print out Nulo’s ingredient information and fax or e-mail your vet for his or her opinion if you have any doubt about switching. Always be safe when your pet’s health is in your hands.
The term ‘natural,’ as defined by the USDA – means ‘no artificial flavoring, color ingredients, chemical preservatives or artificial ingredients.’
At Nulo, we take pet nutrition seriously and make sure there are no by-products, no corn, no soy, and no wheat in our recipes. Nulo’s dog foods are highly digestible and non-allergenic, and we add the right vitamins, minerals and fatty acids for the strongest bones and shiniest coats.
Our natural, nutritionally-supercharged ingredients also include nutrients to help boost a dog’s immune system and metabolism, giving your pet energy and vitality that lasts all day.
Nulo made a conscious decision NOT to formulate our foods as ‘organic’. Organic beef, chicken and fish are so cost-prohibitive that manufacturers end up ‘pushing’ the total protein level out of the food by using plant derivatives such as soy, soy protein and wheat proteins. The end result: expensive food with very little of the animal-based protein that dogs and cats require. Even though ingredients may be certified-organic, that doesn’t make them nutritionally favorable for our beloved canines. For more information regarding proteins, read our Protein-strong™ section under The Nulo Difference.
Nulo is not completely grain free – and for good reason. Grain-free diets typically substitute whole grains with starchy potatoes, which are high on the Glycemic Index and are a ‘quick-to-burn’ fuel. Potatoes also contain glycoalkaloids that can cause diarrhea and cramping in pets.
Just like our active bodies, the right grains actually nourish your pet’s body too and provide a ‘slow-to-burn’ fuel that keeps our pet’s energy levels stable and constant.
Nulo uses whole brown rice, oatmeal, and sweet potato because they are easy to digest, are gluten-free and release energy more slowly over time. Since the majority of our food’s protein comes from meat, not plants, we believe that this is a healthier, more responsible way to feed your dog.
Nulo’s dog foods are formulated by our team of food scientists and nutritionists for all breeds, and all life stages – AAFCO certified, meeting the AAFCO Dog Nutrient Profiles for all life stages – to ensure optimal nutrition for puppies as well as adults and older dogs.
You do not need to buy a separate puppy ‘formula’ as long as you’re feeding them the right nutrient levels and in the right proportion. If you think about it, in the wild, do wolves provide one type of food to their young, while they themselves eat another? No! They eat the same diet but in differing amounts.
Nulo has contracted with food producers in three of the world’s leading commercial production kitchens. Nulo’s dry food products are made in Kansas, our wet food products are made in South Dakota, and our treats are baked in Canada. These state-of-the-art commercial production kitchens hand-craft Nulo’s own proprietary recipes in small batches under our supervision and according to our exacting recipe specifications.

The short answer is, maybe it’s not. When evaluating the cost of dog food it’s very important to break it down into a “cost per serving” vs. a “cost per bag” or “can”. If you don’t know by now, most companies use very little meat and high amounts of “fillers” such as corn, wheat and soy. This means that you have to feed a lot more in order to provide adequate nutrition (not optimal, adequate) for your dog. A good visual is the old Total Cereal commercials that compared 1 serving of Total to 8 bowls of the leading brand. Similar concept. Most people don’t realize that really cheap dog food is often more expensive than high end, premium food. Do the math!
Please read our section on The Nulo Difference for an in-depth explanation about what makes Nulo and our foods superior fuel for dogs and cats.

Many of our customers have found that even their most ‘finicky’ dogs, when presented with a bowl of Nulo will gobble it down in one sitting. In fact, in a nutritional feeding trial and research study (i.e., ‘blind taste test’) conducted by a 3rd party organization, Nulo was preferred 9:1 over one of the top selling brands on the market!
Nulo’s ingredients have been designed to optimize a dog’s digestive system, thus producing smaller, firmer stools. Typically, foods with much higher water content and/or soluble fibers can often cause loose stools or diarrhea. The opposite can be true when feeding a food with too much fiber (i.e., so-called ‘diet’ pet foods) where stools can become too firm. In general, our pet’s second or third stools of the day will naturally tend to be a tiny bit softer than the first stool of the day, simply due to the length of time it has spent in their colon.
Although we see dogs get very excited over the flavor, there are some that may tend to be more cautious. We suggest adding a little warm water to the kibble. This helps to release the aroma of the food.
